The Citizens to Support Michigan Women and Children launched a new ad Wednesday exposing an “extreme” and “confusing” state ballot measure that would allow unborn babies to be aborted up to birth in the state.

Voters will decide in November whether to approve Proposal 3, a wordy pro-abortion amendment to the Michigan Constitution that would invalidate basically every abortion regulation in the state.

If it passes, Michigan would allow the killing of unborn babies in abortions through all nine months of pregnancy and allow anyone, including people without any medical training, to “assist” with an abortion, according to the Citizens to Support Michigan Women and Children, a coalition of state pro-life organizations.

“Proposal 3’s leaders are pretending their amendment doesn’t really change anything,” the coalition warned voters in the new ad. “But on your ballot, you will see it plain enough: Any law or health regulation that conflicts with this dangerous, anything-goes language added permanently to our constitution will be repealed.”

The ad explains how the amendment would invalidate at least 41 state laws and create a new, individual “right to abortion” in Michigan. If it passes, laws requiring parental consent for minors, the ban on late-term abortions, abortion facility safety regulations and a requirement that abortions be performed by licensed doctors would be gone.

Currently, Michigan law requires parents to consent for their underage child to have basically any medical procedure, from having their tonsils removed to an abortion. However, the amendment would create an exception for abortion, making it so a girl as young as 12 can have an abortion without her parents’ knowledge or consent.

Another part of the amendment would prohibit state officials from prosecuting anyone who “assists” with an abortion, whether it’s a school counselor helping a 13-year-old get an abortion without her parents’ knowledge or an untrained abortion worker performing an abortion, according to the coalition.

However, the implications of the amendment may not be immediately apparent to the average voter. The pro-life coalition described the 400-word measure as “poorly worded” and “too confusing,” and expressed hopes that the new ad will help voters understand just how extreme it is.

State pro-life leaders nicknamed the proposal The Anything Goes Abortion Amendment because it would allow unregulated, unrestricted abortion on demand in Michigan for years to come.

Earlier this summer, Citizens to Support Michigan Women and Children challenged the proposed constitutional amendment after finding 60 errors on a petition circulated by the pro-abortion group Reproductive Freedom for All to place it on the ballot. Last week, however, the state Supreme Court ruled that the Board of State Canvassers must allow the amendment to be placed on the ballot.

Michigan is a major abortion battleground state. Pro-life Republicans control the state legislature, but pro-abortion Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer repeatedly has vetoed life-saving legislation. In July, Whitmer vetoed $21.4 million in funding to support pregnant and parenting mothers who choose life for their babies.

Michigan has a pre-Roe v. Wade law that protects unborn babies by banning abortions, but a judge recently blocked the law at the request of pro-abortion groups. The amendment could invalidate the law completely if it passes.

Nearly 30,000 unborn babies are aborted in Michigan every year.
